A Fateful Decision

Onboard were 120 young Christian leaders from The Salvation Army. When the disaster struck, they had already secured places in lifeboats and were wearing life jackets, with survival within their grasp. However, upon seeing the water around them filled with people struggling and crying for help, with no hope of rescue, they made a collective, profound decision: to give up their own chance to live.

Salvation in the Water

These young leaders gave up their seats in the lifeboats and took off their own life jackets, handing them to complete strangers. They leaped into the bone-chilling water, using the final moments of their lives to swim toward the dying, leading them in prayer and asking if they knew Jesus. One 18-year-old girl pressed her life jacket into the hands of a man, saying, "I'm ready to die, but you are not. You must live." The man survived and, because of her sacrifice, later embraced the Christian faith.

The Legacy of "OTHERS"

None of the 120 young leaders survived. With their lives, they embodied the single word from the final telegram of Salvation Army founder William Booth: "OTHERS." Their sacrifice was not for death's sake, but to give others the chance for a dual salvation—of both body and soul. This story serves to inspire a new generation to live a life of service, compassion, and sacrifice, because true faith is the willingness to give what you have to someone else, even when you have nothing left.
